Stage 5 - Piraeus to Athens

By now, the peloton will have undertaken some tough stages under the Aegean sun and will be ready for the final proceedings into the capital of Greece, Athens – the birthplace of so much of our culture and philosophical thinking. Today though, the thinking will be down to the various team DS’, as they decide how to tackle this final stage of racing.

Today is 146.5km of mixed roads, with a few short climbs, twisting roads, and ample opportunity for the sprinters to take things on, with the first intermediate sprint coming after only 8.6km. The start city of Piraeus is a tourism delight too, with ample to keep you interested prior to the official roll-out.

Piraeus is the largest port in Greece and combines history, culture, and coastal beauty, making it an ideal destination for cycling tourism routes and as a base for your own 2-wheeled travels once the Hellas Tour is concluded. The waterfront, filled with traditional fish tavernas and tempting culinary stops, completes the experience, blending natural charm, culture, and distinctive gastronomy, alongside the unrivalled history and culture that is the rhythm and signature of Greece and this growing UCI stage race.

Cycling tourism is keen to find new and exciting places for the growing cycling community; and during the 5 days of this 2026 Tour of Hellas, Greece and the Aegean Peninsula has shown itself to be a great contender for the future. Why spend time fighting with the masses elsewhere, when mainland Greece has so much to offer in terms of great roads, unrivalled history and culture spilling out from every corner of this amazing country. The Tour of Hellas has been something special during the first 4 stages, and this final day of racing keeps the pace high and the scenery epic. All that you need to do is to find the perfect place to watch the race unfold.

Mixed roads and sprint opportunities

Now one of Europe’s largest passenger and commercial ports, in 493 BC, Themistocles recognized the potential of Piraeus’s three natural harbours (Kantharos, Zea, and Munichia), transforming it into the premier naval base for the Athenian fleet. Since that time – over 2500 years ago – it has served Greece and European classical history. The fleet that won the Battle of Salamis in 480 BC was based in Piraeus; and the city was subsequently fortified with the now iconic and legendary Themistoclean Walls.

During what is termed its "Golden Age," the city was designed by Hippodamus of Miletus on a grid plan and connected to Athens by the "Long Walls," securing the safe passage of goods and travellers. Today’s peloton, however, will take on the winding roads, skirting the Athens Riveria and tackling 3 intermediate sprints. The first intermediate sprint arrives at Glyfada Marina, before the race returns to the main avenue for the Avance Mile at the famous Limanakia.

It’s then a sharp left towards Anavyssos and on to Keratea for the second intermediate sprint, before passing through the picturesque village of Kouvaras, where the day’s only KOM appears on its narrow streets (Cat. 3 KOM). With the last climb in the bag, the climbers can relax now, as the sprint teams begin to set tactics and haul in any early breakaway. A descent through pine forest leads the peloton back to the sea at Avlaki harbour, before the scenic route drops towards Galazia Akti, returning to the coastal road as it passes the “Karamanlis tunnels”, then heading towards Ilioupoli for the third intermediate sprint of the day.

History, culture and an epic finish

Now, Ancient Athens is on the agenda, and a 6.5 km city-centre circuit, which is raced three times, showcasing the capital’s unrivalled landmarks:

• the Temple of Olympian Zeus,
• Syntagma, Omonia,
• the University, Parliament,
• the Runner, and the Panathenaic Stadium.

And so much more to catch your eye and to keep you here in Greece post-race.

For 2026, the finish is once again in front of the Hellenic Parliament — an iconic backdrop for the winner – as the sprinters take up the strain and head for their final opportunity for glory and a stage win!

And, as the tired and tested riders come across the line, and jerseys are handed out to winners, you can finally think about the opportunities that the 2026 Tour of Hellas has given to you for your own future cycle tourism plans in the beating heart of classical European history – Greece.

If this land of myth and magic and cycling possibilities wasn’t on your cycling radar before, it ought to be now – and it’s waiting to welcome you!

Stage Analysis: Like many of the major stage races worldwide, the final stage finishes in the heart of the capital city, outside the Parliament building with its unique changing of the guards. With regards to the race general classification, we can’t see any changes on this rolling stage. After a couple of GC days were looking at a bunch sprint to close proceedings in this year’s addition. Definitely, a stage for the fast men.
